MICHAEL FOODS DONATES $10,000 TO SUPPORT RECOVERY EFFORTS FOR WAYNE TORNADO VICTIMS

MINNETONKA, Minn. – (11/04/13) – Michael Foods, Inc., a food processor and distributor of eggs, refrigerated grocery and potato products with several Nebraska-based facilities, today announced it is providing a $10,000 donation to the Wayne Tornado Relief Fund to help with ongoing recovery and cleanup efforts following the devastating tornadoes in October 2013 in Wayne, Nebraska.

“We continue to keep all those affected by this disaster in our thoughts and prayers,” said Joe Clevenger, Plant Operations Manager for Michael Foods. “Our employees, our neighbors and our fellow community members were impacted by the devastation, and there is still a lot to be done to restore the area. We are honored to support the communities where we do business and where our employees reside.”  Clevenger said Michael Foods employs more than 500 workers at its Wakefield, Nebraska farms and facilities, which are closely located to where the tornadoes occurred.

Michael Foods and its employees are committed to involvement and contributions in the Wakefield and Wayne communities. These efforts include hosting local food drives, funding scholarships, volunteering at community events, and making numerous donations to non-profit organizations throughout the year.

September: Everyone Counts: Offer the Most for Your Community

This month, Michael Foods held its last event for the summer-long Giving Campaign. September focused on organizing and holding our silent auction which raised more than $11,000 to benefit the United Way, American Red Cross, Spare Key and Community Health Charities. Auction items were donated by Michael Foods employees and several generous companies including:

Items donated include iPads, a variety of apparel, a fishing pole, gift certificates, coolers, golfing items, an airline voucher, a movie night gift basket and even a guided fishing trip with one of our own employees!

Giving Back to the Community
On October 3rd we held our Giving Campaign Wrap Up and Ice Cream Social. Employees who participated in the Giving Campaign had a chance to win prizes such as a Kindle, a Keurig coffee bundle, gift cards and airline vouchers and more. Throughout the summer nearly 70% of our employees participated in the Giving Campaign and Michael Foods raised more than $90,000 to benefit the United Way, American Red Cross, Spare Key and Community Health Charities.

August: Everyone Counts: At Work for Our Community

This month’s focus was on In House Volunteering, and allowed Michael Foods employees the opportunity to contribute their time assembling Snack Packs, Fleece Blankets, Sandwiches and ending the month with a Food & School Supply Drive that benefited several great community organizations which include:
All of the events, with the exception of the fleece blankets, were set up to create a little friendly office competition.  Prizes for the winning teams included movie tickets and a pizza party!

Earlier in August, a group of employees also volunteered at the Produce Distribution at NorthPoint Health and Wellness Center in Minneapolis.  During the summer, NorthPoint hosts 11 produce distributions twice a month that serves approximately 3,300 residence of North Minneapolis regardless of their address or if they receive services from NorthPoint.  It also serves as a gathering for the community and connects members of the community with valuable services (NorthPoint Volunteer Partner Guide to Produce Distributions).

July: Everyone Counts: Invest In Your Community

This month, Michael Foods employees continued their summer long Giving Campaign which kicked-off in June with the Giving Fair.  July has been focusing on Pledging where employees have already donated over $48,000 to benefit the United Way, American Red Cross, Spare Key and Community Health Charities.  Employees who have pledged were entered into the weekly drawings for some great prizes; which included Twins Tickets and gift cards to Manny’s Steakhouse!

Earlier in July, a group of employees donated their time assembling 500 bracelets and 500 shoe laces for the MN Ovarian Cancer Alliance.  The MOCA has employers assemble up to 20,000 of these items to give away to state youth sports teams to bring attention to Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month which is in September.

Starting next week, we will be kicking off our In-House volunteering which will consist of weekly competitions assembling Sandwiches, Snack Packs and Fleece blankets that will benefit a variety of charities!
